KNOW YOUR JEWELLERY
When it comes to buying jewellery, there are so many types of stones, finishes, styles and materials to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start. And how to take care of your jewellery.
Karat
Karat is a measurement of the purity of gold.
Hallmarks
The BIS hallmark is a hallmarking system for gold as well as silver jewellery sold in India certifying the purity of the metal. It certifies that the piece of jewellery conforms to a set of standards laid by the Bureau of Indian Standards, the national standards organization of India. India is the second biggest market for gold and its jewellery.
Wastage in jewellery making
In the process of jewellery making some gold particles are left as residue or lost .This is known as wastage in gold making.
Purity of gold jewellery
The higher the karat number, the higher the percentage of gold in your gold jewellery. 24K- pure gold; 22K – 91.6% gold ; 18K- 75% gold; 14K – 58.3% gold; 12K – 50% gold; 10K – 41.7% gold. Pure gold is too soft for use in jewellery, so it is usually mixed with other metals to make it harder.
White gold
White gold is produced from the mixing of gold, copper, palladium, or nickel. Various shades of yellow gold can be created from the mixing of gold, silver, copper, and small amounts of palladium manganese or nickel.
Clean your jewellery
Remove your jewellery and put each piece separately. In a bowl of water containing any mild liquid detergent. Use a soft brush to create lather around the jewellery. Rinse the piece off – not over the drain, in a metal or plastic strainer. Dry your jewellery with a soft, lint-free cloth.
